A Little About Me….
My name is Dana and I have been gardening since I was a little kid. One of my dads biggest dreams was to have a big yard and his own garden. Matter of fact, when my parent were ready to buy their own house, they were more interested in the yard than the house. After months of looking, they found the perfect place with a big yard and an attached orchard. You could see the excitement in my parents face trying to decide the best possible place for their garden plot, herbs, fruit trees, and flower beds, so at the age of six, I became a gardener…. Now I am not going to lie, gardening was not my first choice of an after school and weekend activity, especially at such a young age. It wasn’t until I become older that I really appreciated all the things my parents had taught me about gardening. When I was ready to buy my own house 18-years-ago (yay), what caught my eye was the yard and that is when I became a full time gardener. Gardening in not just a hobby for me, it has become a way of life.
I spend most of my time in my gardens as well as creating a welcoming backyard safe sanctuary for local wildlife by planting beautiful flowers, plants and colorful fruit-bearing trees to attract birds, butterflies, bees, and other insects. I also provides food, shelter and water to many different other species of wildlife. When starting a garden it is important to remember that most crops are grown from their fruits for example; vegetables such as squash, cucumber, tomato and eggplant require pollination by insects so they play a critical role in ensuring production of seeds in most flowering plants and for maintaining a healthy successful garden. One of the best known pollinators are honeybees and bumblebees but there are a myriad of other insects that contribute to pollination including butterflies so while you are planning your backyard garden, you may want to consider providing other types of flowering plants that attract insects to bring about seed and fruit production.
The reason I started this website is that I wanted to share with you what I have learned about all things gardening, to share tips on how, when, and what to plant based on your location, how to grow a beautiful garden by choosing native plants for your particular growing conditions, and what types of vegetation will provide a safe haven for birds and wildlife based on where you live.
